About Marty (according to Mother Thompson)

The Life of Marty as told by Marty's Mom.

A long, long time ago, in a land not so far away a little boy would sit in front of an old console record player and play stacks of old 78s. Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, The TOO Fat Polka...

Then one day the record player wouldn't play--- so he turned on the radio and found "Dusty on Duty" and a new kind of music---ROCK AND ROLL! His life would never be the same.

From that Magical Moment one thing was for sure...Little Marty wanted to be on the radio like his Hero Dusty Rhodes.

A fine West Hi education (and really being a pain in the butt) got him in the door at a radio station in Idaho Falls, Idaho. They hired him to do weekends and soon he was the morning man (since he was the only one willing to show up at 5am while the payroll checks were bouncing).

Marty heard of a new station back home in Cincinnati that was playing oldies--- even cooler, it was the old 1-2-3 WB...Before long, Marty was working with his other hero, Ted McAllister, at the Queen City's first oldies station, WDJO.

After a few years Marty was replaced by a large blue automation system---Think of 10 washing machines on steroids. The man to fire Marty was none other than COOL Bobby B (he was the mean old General Manager at the station)-- Actually he fired Marty twice (ask either of them to tell you the story-- it is pretty funny--- OR NOT!)
From there, it was to the Hot Wax weekends on 55KRC and 700WLW and to his first programming job at a station in Middletown (yet another job he got because he really didn't care that the checks sometimes didn't clear at the bank).

Then, driving home in his Geo Metro, he punched up WBLZ. (It was a really long drive from Middletown to Cheviot)... They were not playing hip hop-- it was Oldies---- Frantic Phone calls--- Begging. Pleading. Several years of Saturday carwashes for the General Manager, and they agreed to hire Marty to do the afternoon show. Soon he became the "big guy" and enjoyed lots of beer--and some success.

Things went weird-- new bosses--- nasty people--- 4 ownership changes in a year and the Party Man moved on. First to 700 WLW (Hi Willie) then to Las Vegas to host a nationally syndicated radio show "Live! from Las Vegas". What an awesome 4years-- Meeting all the oldies stars. Playing the hits for a nationwide audience. But alas, like all great shows, (Gilligan's Island comes to mind) the show was cancelled. Marty became the PD of KQOL Las Vegas and made it one of the highest rated oldies station in America.... Life was good!

That all changed with a phone call. "Hey Marty, your old station in Cincy really stinks... they have turned their backs on the 50's and early 60's and they are playing disco records. (sniff sniff) What do you think about doing real oldies on WDJO"? YES! YES! YES! YES! (a Meg Ryan Thing). Marty caught the next Greyhound home and is very excited to be back in the Queen City on Oldies 1480 WDJO!!!
