· Neil Diamond, Donovan, Joe Tex and Darlene Love were inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame March 14 in New York. The Grammy folks have added 30 more recording for the Grammy Hall Of Fame, including Penny Lane by The Beatles, Walkin’ To New Orleans by Fats Domino, The Letter by The Box Tops, Please Mr. Postman by The Marvelettes, We Gotta Get Out Of This Place by The Animals and The Cat’s In The Cradle by Harry Chapin. There are now 881 recordings in the Hall of Fame.
· Wayne Fontana has more legal problems. He was arrested March 9th just before a scheduled performance in Manchester, England and taken away in handcuffs. Police were looking for him for failing to show up in court for an unpaid speeding ticket. 3 years ago, Wayne Fontana spent 11 months in jail for setting a bailiff’s car on fire.
· Annette Funicello, now 68-years-old, and her husband & live-in nurse were rushed to a hospital in Encino, California Marhc 10th suffering from smoke inhalation. A fire at their home did considerable damage. Annette is wheelchair-bound with MS. But she is in good condition now.
· Mark Dinning’s sister Jean Dinning, a member of the singing group The Dinning Sisters in the 40s, died February 22nd at her home in Garden Grove. Jean and her husband at the time wrote Mark Dinning’s number one hit in 1960, Teen Angel. Jean Dinning was 86.
· The Cadillacs original bass singer, Bobby Phillips, died March 6th. Bobby sang with them from their formation as The Carnations and sang on The Cadillacs’ biggest hit, Speedo.
· Ringo Starr is bringing his All- Starr Band to Warsaw, Poland on June 15th and to the Hampton Court Palace Festival on June 17th. That show wraps up the festival and is the only London gig on Ringo’s schedule this summer. We are assuming that Edgar Winter, Gary Wright and Rick Derringer will join Ringo. They were part of his All Starr Band when Ringo toured last year.
· Paul McCartney won his first Grammy since 1979 with Wings at the Grammy Awards this year. Paul won for Best Rock Vocal for Helter Skelter. There was also a tribute to Aretha Franklin at the Grammy Awards show.
· Going into the Hit Parade Hall Of Fame: The Rascals, The Righteous Brothers, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Dusty Springfield, James Taylor, Jackie DeShannon, The Diamonds, Eric Clapton, Abba, Bo Diddley, Willie Nelson, Dan Fogelberg and Pink Floyd.
· · There’s a new documentary film out that explores Beach Boy Brian Wilson’s work as a songwriter. Brian Wilson: Songwriter 1962-1969 looks at Brian’s work with The Beach Boys. Bruce Johnston, Billy Hinsche, David Marks, Carol Kaye and Hal Blaine all appear in the movie.
· A new film based on The Beach Boys’ music is in the works. Sometime Beach Boy and part of the TV show Glee, John Stamos, is the co-producer of the film.
· Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio of The Four Seasons have been collaborating on music together for 50 years on a handshake – splitting the profits from The Four Seasons’ hits through their Tony Award-winning Broadway musical about the group, Jersey Boys.
· Stevie Wonder will be inducted into the Apollo Theater Hall of Fame in Harlem on June 13th. Stevie first performed at the theater when he was 12.
Paul Revere & The Raiders lead singer Mark Lindsay is an avid reader. Mark says he tried to read at least two novels a month.
· · Cher has become the first artist ever with number one songs in 6 different decades. Her latest single You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Me hit #1 last week on the Billboard Dance Chart. It’s from her movie Burlesque. Cher’s first #1 hit was with Sonny in 1965 - I Got You Babe.
· Art Garfunkel is an avid reader. He reads three or four books a month depending on his schedule. And his tastes run quite a gamut. Art reads everything from Stephen Hawking to J.K. Rowling. · Howard Kaylan of The Turtles is publishing his memories soon. No release date has been announced. Howard was helped by former Goldmine music magazine editor Jeff Tamarkin on the project.
